What a Conex Box Is
"Conex" is the name the box wore before global freight standardized it. The term is commonly traced to the U.S. military's Container Express system, shortened to CONEX: a rigid, reusable steel shipping crate fielded around the Korean War era so supplies could move from depot to unit as one sealed, stackable load instead of a pile of loose crates. The idea worked so well that commercial shipping ran with it. The boxes grew into the standardized ISO containers that now carry most of the world's cargo, and the old military name never let go.
Veterans still say conex. So do contractors, farmers, riggers, and most people who learned the box on a job site rather than at a port. When you search for a conex box for sale, you are searching for the same product listed everywhere else as a shipping container. Same steel, same doors, same dimensions. The only thing the name changes is who you learned it from.
Conex Box vs Shipping Container: The Honest Answer
They are the same thing, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend "conex" is a special product line. The steel box on the ground goes by at least five names, depending on which industry is talking:

There is no spec difference and no reason to shop differently based on the word. If a seller implies a conex is something other than a shipping container, that is a sales angle, not a fact.

20ft Conex Box
20' x 8' x 8'6" externally, about 160 sq ft of floor. Fits a standard driveway or a tight job site with the doors still able to swing, and it is the size most homeowners and single crews land on. See the 20ft container.

Condition: Used, Wind & Water Tight
Every conex we sell is used and graded Wind & Water Tight (WWT). That means the box is structurally sound and seals out rain, wind, snow, and pests, with honest cosmetic wear from its cargo years: surface rust, scratches, dents, and floors that may show staining, all over weathering (Cor-Ten) steel built to last decades on the ground.
Two things to know before you buy. These units are sold as-is for storage and on-site use; they are not certified for ocean shipping, and for a box that will sit on your property, that certification simply is not needed. And the seal is not a shrug: our Lifetime Leak Warranty stands behind it.

Yes. "Conex box" and "shipping container" are two names for the same corrugated steel ISO box. The word conex is commonly traced to the military's Container Express system of the Korean War era, and it stuck as the everyday name in the trades, while the freight industry standardized the same design worldwide. Sea can and cargo container refer to the same product too. Sizes, specs, and condition grades are identical no matter which name a seller uses.
Can I buy a used conex box instead of a new one?
