§ 04 Decision: Cost Market Analysis

What will it
Really cost?

All-in. Container, delivery, setup. No surprise fees. Container pricing is regional and fluctuates with the shipping market; we'll show you the drivers.

Delivered totals 15 metros Used wind and water tight

What a container costs, metro by metro.

Each figure is a delivered total for a used wind and water tight container: the container, the delivery, and placement on flat ground, priced from the population-centroid ZIP of that metro. A 20ft container runs from $1,640 in Charleston to $2,150 in Huntington, a spread of $510 on the same size and the same grade.

Your ZIP is not one of these, and delivery distance is most of what moves the number, so read a row as a published figure for the ZIP beside it rather than as your quote. Figures move with the shipping market, which is why each row carries the date its own figures last changed. Request a quote and we will run yours.

The alternative nobody prices honestly

After about six months, the math flips.

Every price on this page is a one-time number: paid once, finished. The alternative most buyers are quietly comparing against is monthly rental, either a self-storage unit or a PODS-style portable storage box, and that alternative has a different shape entirely. Rent is a line that climbs every month with no last payment on the calendar. A purchase is a point that never moves. A climbing line always crosses a fixed point, usually within months for storage that stays put, and the exact month depends on your rental quote, not on an average. Our rent vs buy calculator finds your break-even with your own figures, and our portable storage guide explains when renting genuinely wins.

There is a third shape, worth knowing before anyone decides the one-time number is out of reach. Rent-to-own asks for a small amount at the start, then runs a fixed number of monthly payments with a last one already on the calendar, and the container belongs to you when the term finishes. From September 1, 2026, My Container Rental, the independent third party that administers that program, sets the amount due at signing at $99. $99 applies to standard containers delivered within 150 miles of the depot your container ships from; 20% down beyond that. Approval is theirs to give rather than ours, and the full terms sit on our rent-to-own page.

Structural only: how the two shapes sit on a calendar. No rates, because yours come from your own written quotes.
Point on the calendar Renting, month by month Buying, once
Month 1 One payment made, plus delivery The whole number, paid
Month 6 Six payments and counting The same number
Month 12 Twelve payments, plus the final haul away still to come The same number, nothing further scheduled

The Four Price Drivers

Instead of guessing, evaluate your quotes using these four standard drivers of container cost.

1. Size

Predictable base

Larger units cost more total, but less per square foot. A 40-foot unit provides 2x the space of a 20-foot for only ~40-60% more cost.

2. Condition

The biggest variance

Condition determines much of the price spread. A Wind & Water Tight (used) unit is the best value for most agricultural and equipment storage: weather-tight and structurally sound for far less than new.

→ 50% savings vs new

3. Logistics

Delivery distance

Geography moves a delivered total more than anything else we can measure, because we price one grade and one condition. In the table above, the same 20ft container runs $1,640 delivered in Charleston and $2,150 in Huntington: a $510 spread on an identical box, on geography alone. A site that needs a crane adds that labor on top.

4. Market Cycles

The timing factor

Prices fluctuate monthly based on global shipping volume and regional inventory. Patience usually equals savings.

The One Question That Protects You

Before you compare quotes, ask the question that catches most hidden costs: "Does that price include delivery?" A low sticker price is the oldest trap in this market: the container looks cheap, then freight gets added at the end.

Why a Low Sticker Price Misleads

Compare delivered totals

Most listings for cheap shipping containers get to that number the same way: the freight is left off the headline. Shipping a steel box is not cheap, and a seller who leaves it out can look cheaper than they are until the freight arrives at the end. Compare the delivered total instead of the sticker.

Every figure in the table above is already a delivered total: container, delivery, and placement on flat ground, with the ZIP it was priced from printed beside it. When you request a quote, that is the number we give you, run for your own ZIP.

What that looks like from the buyer's side is a price that sounds like a steal right up to the moment freight gets quoted on top of it. The cheap container that wasn't follows one buyer through exactly that call, and through the single question that would have caught it in the first thirty seconds.

If renting for a stretch is still on the table, the comparison worth running is not sticker against sticker but total against total over the months you need it. Our rent vs buy calculator will work out your break-even month, the month where buying stops costing more than renting.
