Shipping container permits in Nassau County, New York.

It depends on where you are and how you'll use the container. Permit and zoning rules vary by county, municipality, and intended use, and it's the buyer's responsibility to confirm them with the local authority before purchasing. We do not determine, advise on, or guarantee permit requirements.
Who decides in Nassau County, New York?
Your parcel sits in Nassau County, New York, and the office below is where to start. If your parcel is inside a city, town, township, or village, that municipality may be the one that answers, so ask which. We publish who to ask and what to ask them. We do not answer for them, and nothing on this page is a determination about your property.

Office pages move and phone trees change. If a link above lands somewhere unhelpful, search the county site for planning, zoning, or building, and ask for the person who handles land use questions from residents.
What to ask them
8 questions, in the form to put them in. Every one is a question for the office rather than an answer from us, because the answer is theirs to give and it turns on your parcel and your plans.
- Intended use Ask what changes for plain storage versus a workshop, an office, or anything anybody sleeps in, and tell them which one you have in mind.
- Duration on site Ask whether the answer changes with how long the container sits there, and say whether it is for a season or for good.
- Setbacks and placement Ask how they measure setbacks on a parcel like yours, and from which line: the road, the rear, the side, or an easement.
- Their own categories Ask which category their code puts a container in, and what that category asks of the owner, rather than assuming it matches a neighboring county.
- Ground and tie-down Ask whether they want it set on blocks, on gravel, on a pad, or tied down, and who has to sign that off.
- HOA and deed restrictions Ask your HOA or read your deed restrictions separately, because a subdivision can carry its own rules on top of whatever the county tells you.
- Applications, fees, timing Ask which applications they take for this, what each one costs, how long each takes, and what they want submitted with it.
- In writing Ask for the answer in writing, with the name of the person who gave it, before you buy anything.
What Steel Box Direct can and cannot tell you
We sell containers and we deliver them. We do not determine, advise on, or guarantee permit requirements, and we do not speak for any office named on this page.
What we can tell you is the outside dimensions, the condition grade, the door end, and what the truck needs to reach the spot you have in mind. If the office in Nassau County wants dimensions or a site sketch to answer your question, ask us and we will send what we have.
Confirming what applies to your property is the buyer's responsibility, and it is worth doing before you buy rather than after the container is on the ground.
Getting the truck in
A loaded container delivery rig is roughly a sixty-five foot truck combination. For a tilt-bed delivery it needs at least 100 feet of straight approach, 12 feet of width clearance at the narrowest point of the route, and 14 feet of overhead clearance for branches and wires. The ground along the route and at the drop point has to support a 30,000 lb truck. When a site cannot provide that, a crane-set delivery places the container instead.
Almost all deliveries take about two weeks, and we will give you an honest window before you commit.
The full version, with the tilt-bed geometry and the four things that stop a delivery, is in our delivery guide.
